Fragments of Humanity

Fragments of Humanity explores the imperfections that define us, using the seven deadly sins as a lens to highlight how mistakes and flaws are essential aspects of being human. The film invites the viewer to reflect on the value of imperfection, emphasizing that even in our shortcomings, there is strength and beauty.

Created in Houdini and rendered with Redshift, the project visualizes these themes through symbolic imagery and dynamic simulations. Each element embodies a sin, revealing the tension between beauty, imperfection, and redemption. At its center stands a statue representing humanity, initially fracturing under the weight of its flaws but ultimately finding restoration in an act of self-repair.

My contributions focused on key aspects of the visual narrative. The rotting apple first symbolizes envy (invidia), referencing the forbidden fruit of Adam and Eve, before transitioning to gluttony (gula) as it decays – a metaphor for consuming even rotten food rather than sharing it with those in need. The love couple shots symbolize lust, highlighting human vulnerability and longing.

I also developed a procedural crack setup for the statue, allowing intricate destruction effects, and orchestrated its explosive transformation. In the end, the statue repairs itself through its golden tear, inspired by the Japanese "Kintsugi" technique, where broken objects are mended with gold, showcasing the beauty of imperfection and resilience.

When finalising the project I handled compositing and color grading in Nuke and DaVinci Resolve. This final stage ensured that the visuals resonated with the emotional depth of the concept and brought cohesion to the technical and artistic elements.

Fragments of Humanity is both a celebration of human imperfection and a reminder of the beauty found in resilience and self-healing. Explore this project and experience how it captures the essence of what it means to be human.
